The Dodos have been around since 2005, but seem to have gained more popularity last year with their release Visiter. While most of the time they get lumped into the ever expanded genre of indie rock, the majority of their songs have a folk flavor, sometimes called psychedelic folk. Trippy, right? Either way, they make some great tunes. "Fools" is a wonderfully catchy track.

Nickel Eye, the solo project of The Stroke's bassist Nikolai Fraiture, is releasing his debut album entitled The Time of the Assassins on this Tuesday, Feb 27th. While the album has a little hint of the Stroke's flavor, Nikolai has made a name for himself. Pitchfork only gave it a 5.2, which is fair but I probably would have said about a 7/10. I think it's a pretty solid album throughout. Guess you'll have to decide for yourself.

I've been a fan of Greg Laswell for some time now, but he has just released his newest CD Three Flights from Alto Nido, and I must say...it's quite beautiful. Although he's been compared to the likes of Jeff Buckley and Ron Sexsmith, I think he's a little different than those guys. Anyhow, this is a beautiful and relaxing CD that caught me from the first track. He has one hell of a soothing voice.

I was introduced to Scott Matthews just the other day, and his CD Passing Strangers has been on repeat since its first listen. This extremely talented musician hails from the UK and with a voice that reminds me of, dare I say it....Jeff Buckley. Combine that with some beautiful arrangements and you have some fantastic music. Give this guy a try, really great stuff.

The Be Good Tanyas are an alt-country/folk/bluegrass group I came upon a few weeks ago. Made up of three talented female musicians from up north in Canada...these women come together to make some soothing relaxing tunes. All three have beautiful voices and create some touching harmonies. "Human Thing" was their first song I heard, and fell in love right away.

Joni Mitchell has been around forever, but I popped in her CD Blue for the first time in awhile and remembered how amazing of an album it really is. This album is one that EVERYONE needs to have in their music collection, it is an absolute classic. If you haven't heard it, get on it right away.

In 2003, the album was ranked number 30 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. In Chart's three reader polls to determine the 50 greatest Canadian albums of all time, Blue won the top spot in 2000 and third place in 1996 and 2005. It was also ranked #14 on a list compiled by VH1 of the 100 Greatest Albums of All Time, the highest album by a female artist to appear on the list. In addition, it was also voted also 13 on Hotpress Magazine's "Top 100 Albums ever" by various other artists, and was voted 66th in Channel 4's countdown of the 100 Greatest Albums. It was listed among the "All-Time 100 albums by Time magazine in november 2006.

I first heard about Brett Dennen a few years back when his self titled CD came out and got sucked into his unique voice and fun folk music right away. A young musician from the west coast, Brett has a fun style of folk-pop that easily catches your ear. He's been featured on indie radio stations across the country and even fellow singer/songwriter John Mayer has said his newest CD So Much More is "A beautiful and spirited record. Instantly likeable." His CD has not left my playlist for awhile and I hope it doesn't leave yours.

Wow. I just found out about Piers Faccini today and I'm already in love. Piers is a frenchman who is the newest member of the Everloving Records family (home to Jack Johnson and Joseph Arthur).


This guy has one hell of a voice, that's for sure. His CD Tearing Sky just came out this week in the US and has everything from folk to blues and matched with his gorgeous voice, it comes together as some beautiful music. Apparently he is currently on tour overseas but hopefully he will be coming to the states soon. I am gonna have to catch this guy before he gets big. This is a great CD to pop in on a lazy rainy Saturday afternoon.

Oh look, another fantastic group I discovered from Greys Anatomy, what a surprise! But yes, I first heard The Weepies track The World Spins Madly On at the end of an episode in Season One and was on a mission to find out who it was from the minute I heard it. Thankfully, it wasn't too hard to find. Their newest CD Say I Am To You has become a hit everywhere it feels like, and rightfully so. They are a folk-pop duo composed of Deb Talan and Steve Tannen, both of which have also put out solo CDs...but I think they have done their best work together.

Their songs are simple and filled with beautiful harmonies...and although their band name may sound sad, their music is nothing but smiles.

Foy Vance is another artist I found from the wonderful Grey's Anatomy. (I need to give a hug to their music supervisor). Seems a lot of people enjoyed his song "Homebird" after being played on the show because I saw requests for it all over the internet after the episode.

I finally got my hands on it, and it's definitely a keeper. Simple, acoustic, and souful. It can be found on his new EP, Watermelon Oranges , which sadly only has 5 tracks. We can only hope he puts out an LP very soon.

Until then, sit back and enjoy Homebird. I promise it will make you smile.

biscuits for breakfast

To be honest, I'm not even sure how I came across Fink, but I'm glad I did. His CD Biscuits for Breakfast came out this year in the UK, but doesn't seem to be out anywhere in the US just yet. From what I have read, seems Fink has focused more on Electronic music and DJing in the past....but this CD is completely acoustic. Just Fink and his guitar, mixed with some fun beats.

Biscuits For Breakfast, is everything Fink hoped it would be: a collection of intriguingly personal, folk-inflected, acoustic soul songs that are essentially and intrinsically him.

His myspace has some tracks from the album along with a session from Napster of "Biscuits" (one of my favorites from the CD). He's simple, relaxing....but still melodic and fun.

"Beautifully produced, achingly soulful, "Biscuits For Breakfast" is an album that will stand the test of time, because at root it's built on original, honest song-writing"
