so it's that time of year again...time to take a look back at the albums I've listened to and enjoyed the most in 2009.

I have to say, I used to spend a lot more time and thought into this process but I just don't have the time anymore. No blurbs this year either, just a straight up list of my picks. I've probably forgotten about/am missing a lot of great albums from this year, but oh well.

And remember these are my PERSONAL favorites, and most listened to albums from this year...doesn't mean the critics will agree.

I have been a huge fan of Ra Ra Riot for some time now, (and even did a previous entry on them). This rock band from Syracuse has received a ton of praise for both their albums and live shows. I just came across some live video of them on Pitchfork and thought I would share with you all. I'm a fan of every track on their newest album, The Rhumb Line, but my standouts are Can You Tell and Dying is Fine.

The first time I heard Bombay Bicycle Club's track "Always Like This" I fell in love. I haven't been this excited for a CD just from one track in a very long. Their upcoming album, entitled I Had The Blues But I Shook Them Loose, looks like it's coming out July 6th in the UK. Look out for these guys, they really make some great music. There is something about Jack Steadman's voice that I absolutely love. NME Magazine named them "...the hottest band to come from North London for quite some time." Really looking forward to this album.

The Maccabees are an English indie-rock band who have just released their sophomore album entitled Wall of Arms. This talented band has done it again with an album even better than their first. Fronted by the beautiful voice of Orlando Weeks, The Maccabees combine elements of indie rock/pop to make some honest and deeply personal tunes. The release has been compared to Arcade Fire's fantastic CD, Neon Bible...and while I see it, why always the comparisons people? I can already tell this album will be in the mix for weeks to come. It's perfect for a drive on a beautiful day...with the windows down and the music blasting.

Too long overlooked as ‘another indie band’ 'Wall Of Arms’ is the moment The Maccabees reach self-realization. This is the sound of burgeoning romance, unrequited love, chest beating passion and tranquil, all encompassing warmth. Sure to be one of the years finest releases. - Gigwise 4/21/09

I cannot stop listening to Fanfarlo, it's at simple as that. This London based indie rock band has released a fantastic new album entitled Reservoir. I can already honestly say that this is probably going to be one of my most listened to albums of 2009, it's that good. Reviews across the web are continually saying they're "Beirut meets Arcade Fire," and while that's a decent comparison, how about we let them be their own band? I can't say enough wonderful things about this CD, seriously. And it's only $5.99 on iTunes right now, so you have no excuse. My prediction: these guys will blow up over the next 6 months. Let's check back and see, shall we? Until then, let's enjoy.

as my love for all things indietronica, electro-pop and synth-pop continues to grow so does my obsession with Passion Pit. This five member electronic group is pretty well known for their awesome remixes throughout the music world, but they make some excellent music of their own. Their first full length album, Manners, is set to be released on May 18th and is already getting great reviews. Catchy, fun, synth-pop....check it out.

I finally got my hand's on the new Metric album, Fantasies. I already made a post about this fabulous band a few months ago, but at that point had only heard one track: Help, I'm Alive. After having a listen to Fantasies, my love for this band has grown even more. The band's lead singer Emily Haines has such a fantastic voice and together with the rest of the band they have created some great indie pop/rock. You gotta love a chick who knows how to rock.

I Might Be Wrong (not to be confused with the awesome Radiohead song) are an indie-rock group from Berlin. Their song "We Don't Wear Colours" was on an indie mix I'm currently listening to and the female lead vocals caught my ears. Their last album entitled It Tends To Flow From High to Low was released in 2007 and it sounds like another is in the works. I've been a huge fan of Emiliana Torrini for some time, but I just can't seem to get enough of her newest album, Me And Armini. This Icelandic singer-songwriter has a large fan base across the world. Her last album, Fisherman's Woman, was on my playlist a ton in 2005, but this new album may have passed it as my new favorite. Her gorgeous and soft voice is whimsical, and will grab you from the start. You also may have heard her music featured all over the place on Grey's Anatomy, and while I think the show sucks these days, I have to give them credit for their great musical choices. Anyone who enjoys a beautiful girl who sings gorgeous melodies needs to give this woman a listen, you will fall in love.

The Local Natives are an indie rock band hailing from Los Angeles. I was first introduced to their song "Airplanes" from a monthly indie mix I receive. This five piece group barely has their own website yet, using their Myspace as a primary information source. Because of this I don't have too much info on the band to share, but I'll let the music speak for itself. Hope you dig.

Jeremy Warmsley is a London based singer-songwriter who incorporates styles of rock, electronica and pop to make some fun songwriting. His 2008 release How We Became didn't see too much play in the states, but some decent reviews overseas. It's a shame this guy didn't get more coverage, he deserved it.

Patrick Watson is an amazing musician who I have adored for some time now, and even have done a previous entry for his debut album. This Canadian singer-songwriter acquired a large following after his 2006 release, Close To Paradise. He's been compared to the likes of M. Ward and Jeff Buckley, and while I'm not a big fan of comparisons I have to say that they are right on with those. His gorgeous voice mixed with his unique style of cabaret pop makes some beautiful stuff. Patrick will be released another album in April entitled Wooden Arms. First mp3 track released from the album is "Tracy's Waters". If that's any indication of what the rest of the album is like, we are in luck.

Ida Maria Børli Sivertsen, or better known as Ida Maria, is a Norwegian rocker chick who has had a great deal of success in Norway and is breaking through here in the US. Her 2008 release Fortress Round My Heart, has gotten great reviews across the board. This chick knows how to make some catchy rock music.

Ida Maria Sivertsen has a powerful voice that conjures so many classic-rock associations it's a wonder she doesn't get lost amid all the references. On her debut album, Fortress Round My Heart, she howls like Janis Joplin, with a bit of soulful vibrato that almost sounds like grandstanding. She rasps like Courtney Love, similarly steeped in cigarettes and alcohol but without the manic aversion to actually making music.

just got my hands on The Veils new album entitled Sun Gangs and I'm really loving what I hear so far. Fronted by Finn Andrews, The Veils have been around since 2002. Sun Gangs will be their 3rd album together, which will be released in April. Finn has a unique voice which is often combined with his female band-mates making for some beautiful harmonies. Can't recommend these guys enough, check them out.

Miranda Lee Richards is a singer-songwriter who hails from San Francisco. Her soothing vocals are reminiscent of singer-songwriters from an older era. Miranda claims Mazzy Star was an inspiration for her and you can hear tastes of them in her music. Fans of Neko Case will enjoy her stuff, along with anyone who is a sucker for a girl with a guitar.

Just Jack was a popular artist in the UK in 2007 and is back with a new album this year called All Night Cinema, to be released in April. He's probably best known for his big hit "Starz In Their Eyes," which was a catchy tune with elements of pop, electronica, hip-hop, and rap. He's back with a new single called Embers, which is likely to be another hit for the talented Jack Allsop. He's had some comparisons to The Streets along the way, and while I can see the similarities, he's a got style all his own.

St. Vincent is a spunky indie singer-songwriter who is releasing her sophomore album in May of this year. The Strangers is the first single and track from the album and if it's any idea how the rest of the album will be, I'm excited. Her debut album, Marry Me, was a favorite of mine with great tracks like "Now, Now." Her beautiful voice continues on this next release. Can't wait to hear the rest...

So I'm listening to my new Paste Magazine Digital download and came across Jeremy Messersmith's track "Miracles," and am hooked. After doing a little research, looks like Jeremy is a singer-songwriter hailing from Minnesota. His latest album entitled, The Silver City, has gotten great reviews, and even some comparisons to Sufjan Stevens. NPR had their own write-up on Jeremy, and had some great things to say:

Throughout The Silver City, Messersmith borrows heavily but lovingly from some of his favorite artists. There's the twinkling harmonies of Brian Wilson and The Beatles, and the gentle touch of Elliott Smith. Some of the chord progressions are reminiscent of Aimee Mann's work. But Messersmith adds his own colorful touches, including the electro-pop and vintage drum loops on "Miracles" and "Virginia," as well as the wistful country swing of "Breaking Down."

Metric is a group who I have enjoyed for some years now. This Canadian crew has their fourth album slated for release on April 14th of this year. Emily Haines is the lead singer, and has had her own success as a solo artist with Knives Don't Have Your Back. Their first single from the album is called "Help, I'm Alive." They have released both the album cut and acoustic version, and while the acoustic is pretty, I'm all about the original version. You can decide for yourself....

just discovered a lovely little track by Robert Francis called Little Girl. After rummaging through the internet, turns out he's a pretty popular guy. Hailing from California, Robert is a singer-songwriter with a little bit of country, and a gorgeous voice to boot. His newest album, One By One, which is on Aeronaut Records, has gotten some pretty great reviews.

One reviewer said: "An incredibly gifted musician, who counts the drums, banjo, bass, piano, mandolin and guitar all as weapons of choice, he focuses more on traversing the minutiae of day-to-day life than on trying to change the world. Heartbreak finds its way into the bulk of the songs, but it's never precious to the point of nausea, which can't be said for most artists his age. As first efforts go, there's not much more you can ask for. Keep an eye on this kid."

just came across this excellent track by High Places. I haven't been able to find their album, or much about them yet....but I'm digging what I hear so far. I love me some electronica these days. Pitchfork gave their self-titled album 8/10.

The Dodos have been around since 2005, but seem to have gained more popularity last year with their release Visiter. While most of the time they get lumped into the ever expanded genre of indie rock, the majority of their songs have a folk flavor, sometimes called psychedelic folk. Trippy, right? Either way, they make some great tunes. "Fools" is a wonderfully catchy track.

The Uglysuit, who hail from Oklahoma, took it to Chicago...or at least sing about it on their track with the same name. Rolling Stone dubbed this six piece band as a group to watch in 2008, and I couldn't agree more (even if I am a little late). Their self-titled debut album, released in August of last year, will hopefully receive more of the positive press they deserve in the coming weeks. Better late than never, right?

Nickel Eye, the solo project of The Stroke's bassist Nikolai Fraiture, is releasing his debut album entitled The Time of the Assassins on this Tuesday, Feb 27th. While the album has a little hint of the Stroke's flavor, Nikolai has made a name for himself. Pitchfork only gave it a 5.2, which is fair but I probably would have said about a 7/10. I think it's a pretty solid album throughout. Guess you'll have to decide for yourself.

I always get excited when I really enjoy a new track from a band I haven't heard of yet. This happened tonight with The Story Of. I don't know much about these guys just yet except that they're a group of five friends hailing from Austin, TX.

A review from Austin Sound says " There’s something about discussing music over beer that always rides a fine line between pretension and authenticity. Among friends, bare bones honesty surfaces, and we can delve into the meat of albums circulating in these days of plentiful “indie” pop rock bands. Though there’s a dearth that’s worth a mention, fewer deserve a full play on your iPod. Austin-via-Athens, Ohio five-piece The Story Of is part of that shiny minority, and migrating southwest 4 years ago brought their creative core closer to the fore."

after getting my hands on a great indie rock mix for Feb 09, the first track was Guggenheim Grotto's, Fee Da Da Dee; what a great start to a mix of new music. The duo, and sometimes trio, hails from Dublin, Ireland and makes some pretty great folk-pop. The band won the 2007 Independent Music award for their song "A Lifetime of Heat." After grabbing their album Happy The Man, it has a number of simplistic but catchy tunes. take a listen.

Anyhow, Ms. Lily Allen is back at again with a great new album called It's Not Me, It's You. This 23 year old bad girl is quite the fireball, but she makes some catchy pop tunes. Some of you may have heard her newest single, The Fear, playing on the radio these days; it is great track and probably my favorite on the record. I hope to see this cheeky girl in NYC next time she comes around. Cheers Ms. Allen.

Cut Copy was one of my favorite new groups to listen to in 2008. Their awesomely delicious electronica album, In Ghost Colours, has been on non-stop for the last month or so. Their CD was also on a number of "Best of 2008" lists across the internet and print. If you haven't taken a listen yet, now is your chance. While they have a little flavor of 80's synthesized goodness, they've created a style of electronica all their own. Take a listen...and boogie.

Basically, I got a warning for posting a mp3 link to a new Lily Allen track, Everyone's At It. Probably not the wisest idea, but I took a chance. Well, needless to say, it looks like I'm going to have to be a bit more careful these days. From here on out, I'm only going to post streaming tracks....as I believe this is still legal (for now.)

I've joined the Twitter world, and it's a good 'ol time. Per Wikipedia, Twitter is a social networking and micro-blogging service that allows its users to send and read other users' updates (known as tweets), which are text-based posts of up to 140 characters in length. It's basically texting of the blogging world. Point is to keep it short and sweet. There are various ways to use your Twitter page, as seen by some of the people I'm "following". Some people use it to share various links with others following them related to their interests, such as technology or news. Others use it simply as a place to keep the world updated to what they're doing or feeling.

While I haven't listened to much experimental music in the past, 2009 is the year of new genres. I just came across the Gang Gang Dance album entitled Saint Dymphna and they have gained a new fan. Apparently this trio has been popular within the indie scene throughout Manhattan and is now getting some larger exposure with their newest CD. With 3 other albums under their belt, I have a lot of catching up to do.

I can't believe I haven't written an entry on Ra Ra Riot. Their album, The Rhumb Line, was absolutely my most listened to album of 2008. These guys hail from Syracuse and have been gaining more popularity throughout the indie world, rightfully so. It appears I wasn't the only one out there that loved their album either. I also got a chance to see these guys with Walter Meego at The Bowery Ballroom in October, and they put on a really fun show. I can't say enough good stuff about these guys, just check 'em out.

2009 may just be the year full of electronica, for me at least. After being obsessed with the Cut Copy CD the last few months, I've started to explore the various artists of this genre a hell of a lot more than I ever have; and having a lot of fun doing so. While I've always been aware that there are a million different kinds of electronica music out there, I'm still finding my niche. I'm still a newbie, so I'm open to any and all suggestions. For now, I'll share a few tracks I've been listening to during these cold winter days.

Bon Iver had one hell of a year in 2008, topping best of lists across the internet and magazines. As 2009 has crept upon us, he is already back with a few new tunes for everyone to obsess over, again. His new EP, Blood Bank, is a 4 track treat. Not sure when he will be releasing a full LP, but this is a great way to start the new year.

Better late than never, right? I'd have to say yes about Blind Pilot. While their album was released in August, I'm just taking a listen now. This folk duo from Portland put out a beautiful album entitled 3 Rounds and A Sound. While fairly simplistic, it just works. Kind of reminds me of Neutral Milk Hotel, a little. Either way, it's simply lovely. 'Oviedo' had me addicted from the first listen.

So as I've been reading a plethora of lists for favorite albums/songs of the year, I came across Air France multiple times. I now see what I was missing. After listening to their song "Collapsing At Your Doorstep," it is clear what the hype was about. The single is a beautiful journey and locked me in from the start. It's a perfect Sunday night tune.

I have been a fan of Third Eye Blind since their self-titled debut back in 1997. (remember Jumper, How's It Going To Be, and of course Semi-Charmed Life?) How can anyone also forget the amazing Motorcycle Drive-By. Anyhow, the band has released a new EP entitled Red Star. While it only has 3 tracks, they are a wonderful reminder of what this alternative-rock band is capable of creating. The title track of the EP is a standout, and is likely to be a hit in the coming weeks. If this is any taste of what is to come on their LP Ursa Major, coming out Feb 2009, we are all in for a musical treat.

I've been a fan of Greg Laswell for some time now, but he has just released his newest CD Three Flights from Alto Nido, and I must say...it's quite beautiful. Although he's been compared to the likes of Jeff Buckley and Ron Sexsmith, I think he's a little different than those guys. Anyhow, this is a beautiful and relaxing CD that caught me from the first track. He has one hell of a soothing voice.

The ever so well-known Coldplay has finally released their fourth album, entitled Viva La Vida. After being disappointed with their last album, X&Y, I was unsure what to expect from this four-some. After a few listens to the new album, I'm pleasantly surprised. The title track is definitely one of my favorites. You may have heard a clip from their ITunes commercial, but it only gives a taste of the full track. Viva la music boys.

since I (lazily) never got around to making my top 10 CDs of 2007, I can at least let you know what my favorite of 2007 was, right?

But of course Radiohead's In Rainbows took the cake, easily. I've been a fan of Radiohead for years, but I must say that this is up there with OK Computer (yup, I said it Radiohead elitists). I probably listened to ONLY this CD for the month's of November and December. Yes, it's that good.

So if you are one of the few people who hasn't given it a listen, please do. There are some masterpieces on there.

Nizlopi has been a favorite of mine for some time now. This folk hip-hop duo from the UK put out some beautiful and unique songs on their first CD entitled Half These Songs Are About You. Their new album, Make It Happen, is set to be released on March 31st and I cannot wait. "Start Beginning" has been named the first single and of course it shows their fun songwriting abilities. Can't wait for this release in '08.

Bell X1 is an Irish band who has been around for some time, and sadly, I'm just joining the fan wagon. They have seen more success overseas, but they are trying to break into the US market even more this year. While their album Flock was released in Europe in 2006, it is just now coming to the states and was released February 19th. I'm glad I finally caught on to the hype of this band. After listening to Flock, it's time to get all their CD's. I can't get enough of Paul Noonan's voice. Beautiful.

Laura Marling is another young fresh singer-songwriter from the UK. The 17 year old has a beautiful voice, reminiscent of a softer Fiona Apple. Her new album entitled Alas I Cannot Swim showcases her soft and sweet vocals along with some clever lyrics. It's amazing such a young artist has the ability to craft such mature music. Look out for this one.

so I was lucky enough to discover a fun indie band called Vampire Weekend, this weekend. They are a young and fresh four-some from New York. Their self titled debut has been getting rave reviews all over the internet, which sparked my own interest in the band. This CD is a fun and fantastic mix of indie-pop that will get anyone moving. Their Myspace has a few tracks from the album as well, if you want a taste. These guys may have released their album this winter, but this seems more like a fun album for the coming spring/summer months.

I was introduced to Scott Matthews just the other day, and his CD Passing Strangers has been on repeat since its first listen. This extremely talented musician hails from the UK and with a voice that reminds me of, dare I say it....Jeff Buckley. Combine that with some beautiful arrangements and you have some fantastic music. Give this guy a try, really great stuff.

Missy Higgins 2nd album, called On A Clear Night comes out in Australia today! So excited...but for some strange reason, it hasn't leaked on the internet just yet, but I'm sure it will be fabulous as always, I love her. Her 2004 album The Sound of White was a favorite of mine for months.

Sia is probably best known as a member of Zero 7, but she has also put out 2 of her own solo albums, Healing is Difficult & Colour the Small One. Lucky for us, she has now put out an amazing 9 track live CD entitled Lady Croissant.

The CD has a few well known Sia songs such as "Breathe Me" and "Don't Bring Me Down", along with two Zero 7 songs and one new studio track called "Pictures." The CD captures how absolutely amazing Sia's voice truly is and how breathtaking her live shows must be. After listening to this record, I am on a mission to see this woman in person. Get this CD, you will not be disappointed.

One of my absolute favorites, Magnet, has just released his 3rd album entitled The Simple Life in Norway this week! The man behind Magnet is Even Johansen, an amazing and humble musician. His previous 2 CDs have been constant rotation since I discovered him back in 2004. Even's gorgeous and soft voice combined with a little rock and some electronic beats make fantastic and catchy melodies. While I enjoyed his previous 2 albums a little better, I'm always going to love everything Magnet puts out, he's a favorite forever.

It's amazing how so many great talents fly under the radar. Patrick Watson is one of those talents. This Canadian musician has been compared to Jeff Buckley and Rufus Wainwright and while the comparisons are a compliment, he is a talent in his own right. His mix of chamber pop and a little classical influence mixed with today's indie rock makes some incredible tunes. I absolutely have fallen in love with his 2006 CD Closer to Paradise. There are some unforgettable songs that hit you hard. This guy is fantastic.

Amy Winehouse may have a reputation for being a big partier, but you can't help but by blown away by her soulful voice. She has been popular over in the UK for months, but her CD Back to Black was finally released in the US this month and hopefully she will get as much recognition in the states. She has a voice that brings you back to the days of othe 50's and 60s, a mix of Billie Holiday and Lauryn Hill. She may be trouble, but you can't help but be sucked in by her jazzy music and her voice full of soul.

Andrew Bird has been a favorite mine for a few years now, but his newest CD Armchair Apocrypha has just leaked a few weeks early, and I must say, I'm quite the happy camper. It's his first album since his critically acclaimed 2005 release which was a favorite of mine as well. Andrew is a fun mix of folk, pop, and rock among some whistling that combine to make some catchy tunes. I can tell this is going to be a favorite of mine from 2007, and I hope it's yours too.

William Fitzsimmons is an amazing new artist I was lucky enough to stumble upon. While his beard might be a bit intimidating at first, don't be scared...his beautiful voice will bring you back. I fell in love with his soft voice right away, mixed with acoustic guitars and even some electronic beats. I promise you won't be disappointed with this guy, really great stuff.

fitzsimmons' writing is utterly personal, usually electing subject matter that would most often only be heard in the confides of a family therapy session. the effect, however, causes the listener to draw closer, rather than farther away, from the gentle melodies which exhume affectivity and remind us that our lives are filled with both joy and suffering, and that it can be a lovely place to find the two sharing a sometimes amicable living space.

Anais Mitchell released her first album in 2002, but is now signed under Ani DiFranco's Righteous Babe Records. Her newest CD entitled The Brightness shows her abilities as a newly established folk artist with a unique voice, that perhaps not everyone will come to enjoy. Some songs are stronger than others on the album, but overall it's enjoyable journey of emotions expressed through music.

The Be Good Tanyas are an alt-country/folk/bluegrass group I came upon a few weeks ago. Made up of three talented female musicians from up north in Canada...these women come together to make some soothing relaxing tunes. All three have beautiful voices and create some touching harmonies. "Human Thing" was their first song I heard, and fell in love right away.

Flamboyant pop singer-songwriter MIKA has been named the best new talent in the BBC's Sound of 2007 music poll. The Beirut-born, London-based 23-year-old has been compared to the Scissor Sisters and Freddie Mercury. More than 130 UK-based music critics and broadcasters took part in the poll by naming their favourite new acts.

The first time I heard MIKA I was a little hesitant but the more I have listened to his newest CD Life in Cartoon Motion, it's grown on me. It's amazing how much this guy sounds like Freddie Mercury of Queen....the comparisons will be never ending. But regardless, he makes some crazy fun pop music. I can see this guy getting pretty popular over here. His music might be little much for some people....but I hope some of you enjoy it!

I just discovered Just Jack yesterday but I've already listened to his soon to be released CD Overtones a few times and it's blast! Just Jack is a combination of a little hip-hop, electronic and simple beats coming together to make some tunes that make you want to boogie. (Yes, I went there.) Apparently this guy is pretty popular over in the UK...but anyhow, it's some fun stuff....hope you dig.

Joni Mitchell has been around forever, but I popped in her CD Blue for the first time in awhile and remembered how amazing of an album it really is. This album is one that EVERYONE needs to have in their music collection, it is an absolute classic. If you haven't heard it, get on it right away.

In 2003, the album was ranked number 30 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. In Chart's three reader polls to determine the 50 greatest Canadian albums of all time, Blue won the top spot in 2000 and third place in 1996 and 2005. It was also ranked #14 on a list compiled by VH1 of the 100 Greatest Albums of All Time, the highest album by a female artist to appear on the list. In addition, it was also voted also 13 on Hotpress Magazine's "Top 100 Albums ever" by various other artists, and was voted 66th in Channel 4's countdown of the 100 Greatest Albums. #5: M. Ward - Post-War

M. Ward clearly has been a popular pick for one of the best albums of the year. I have seen his 2006 release Post-War all over Top Ten lists on the internet, and rightfully so. This CD is by far his best and is perfect from beginning to end. "Poison Cup" was a song that tore me open this year and is painfully beautiful. If you like it, you will love the rest of the CD. Get it as quick as possible...this man is an amazing musician.

#4: Kunek - Flight of the Flynns

I have Andrea to thank for introducing me to Kunek...oh how I adore my musical soulmate. Flight of the Flynns was Kunek's first release and it only left me wanting more from the band, and soon. These guys make some great indie rock. There are a few tracks that stand above the rest on the CD, including some amazing instrumentals, but each track contributes something great. Can't wait for more music from these guys.

#3: As Tall as Lions - As Tall as Lions

These guys were one of my first entries in my music blog, but I haven't given them enough credit. As Tall as Lions are a 4 piece band from Long Island who have been making music since 2002. Their 2006 self-titled release greatly outdoes their 2004 release Lafcadio. I can only hope they keep up with their trend of immproving their style and music for years to come. These guys are highly underrated and hopefully some more people will come to appreciate their music in 2007.

#2: Beth Orton - Comfort of Strangers

Beth Orton has been around for quite some time, but none of her previous efforts compare to the amazing Comfort of Strangers. I absolutely loved every track on this CD...it's modern folk at its absolute finest. This woman has one hell of a voice, that's for sure...and combined with some catchy lyrics and fun riffs, you can't not love this CD and Beth. This CD was very close to being my #1 of the year, but got slightly outweighed by one more. 9/10 for sure....some great music right here.

#1: Midlake - The Trials of Van Occupanther

Midlake is an incredible band, end of story. This CD was by far my favorite of 2006. So I had heard mention of Midlake on a few blogs and websites across the web, but it has been one of those bands that you see everywhere and somehow don't get a chance to listen. Well, it's about fucking time I did. Wow, these guys are awesome. Best CD of 2006, hands down.

They have a bit of a 70's rock kind of feel to them, mixed with some current indie flavor. Tim Smith's vocal's will hook you in from the beginning. Their newest CD The Trials of Van Occupanther has not left my playlists since I got it.

Midlake might be stuck in the '70s, but they make it sound like the best place on earth.

#10: The Weepies - Say I Am To You

Oh how I adore The Weepies. I first heard their song "World Spins Madly On" on Greys Anatomy, of course...and had to know it was right away. After some research I learned of the adorable duo of Steve Tennan and Deb Talan who make up The Weepies. Their CD Say I Am To You seemed to get praise all over the internet after that episode, so cheers to Greys! These guys had one of my most listened CDs of the year, if only for that song alone. Steve and Deb have fantastic harmonies that come together to make some upbeat modern folk. All smiles, no weeping.

#9: The Decemberists - The Crane Wife

The Decemberists have been around for some time, but I didn't get to know their music until last year when Picaresque came out. While these guys haven't had much main stream success, they are huge all over the indie circuit...and as far as I have read, made many top ten lists around the web. This group came together fabulously on The Crane Wife to make some unfortgetable indie pop that any kind of music listener can appreciate. The Crane Wife 3 was one of my favorite tracks of the year, so I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

#8: Horse Feathers - Words Are Dead

I didn't come across Horse Feather's CD Words are Dead until the last month of 2006, but it still made its way onto the list. While this folk CD might not be for everyone, I absolutely loved it. A duo of singer/songwriters Justin Ringle & Peter Broderick came together to create such simple but beautiful acoustic music. This album was one of the most relaxing I listened to this year, so if you're looking for some gorgeous white noise, this is it.

#7: Vetiver - To Find Me Gone

Don't be fooled by the boring cover art found on To Find Me Gone, because it's anything but boring. Another folk CD that made its way to my list (can you tell I'm an addict?) Vetiver's lead singer Andy Cabic has a soft delicate voice that carries throughout the album. There are a range of tracks from striped down love songs to more upbeat tracks, but all display the band's ability to create fantastic music. This one's a keeper.

#6: Glen Hansard - The Swell Season

While The Frame's 2006 release only made #24 on my list, the lead singer's solo debut The Swell Season faired much better. This is Glen Hansard at his most raw and exposed. A love sick record full of heart breaking songs, you can only wonder if these tracks hit home with Glen, they seem too personal to have it be any other scenario. This CD is right up there with Damien Rice's "O" as far as stripped down acoustic beauty. If you love Damien, you will adore Glen's saddening CD.

#14: Ill Lit - Tom Cruise

Ill Lit is another group I found out about by browsing through the ITunes music store bored one day, I highly suggest you do it too! I have found a ton of great stuff that way. Anyhow, I had never heard of Ill Lit before this year, but learned that they had put out 2 CDs previously. I listened to both and Tom Cruise is by far their strongest. I absolutely adore every track on this album, it's fantastic. After you get past the bizarre album title and give the CD a listen, I'm sure you will fall in love, just as I did.

#13: Paolo Nutini - These Streets

Oh Paolo, how I love you so. I have made an entry about Paolo Nutini before, but you can never get enough. While his name may sound Italian, this young Irish songwriter is a huge hit overseas, and sadly hasn't made it over to the US just yet...yet being the key word. These Streets is by far my favorite pop album of 2006. Paolo makes fun and upbeat songs that put a smile on your face, and in the same light also makes some beautiful love-ridden tragedies. This guy is going to be huge, end of story.

#12: John Mayer - Continuum

After being a fan of John Mayer for years, I was very excited to see how his 2006 release would pan out. Well, turns out it's my favorite John Mayer album, ever. While I loved John's old work on Inside Wants Out and Room for Squares, Continuum gave me faith that the days of "Your Body Is A Wonderland" were finally over. With influence from his John Mayer Trio work, this album was a joy to listen to....definitely one of my most listened to of the year. Keep it up Mr. Mayer.

#11: Damien Rice - 9

I'm not going to lie, I was a little sad my beloved Damien Rice didn't make a spot in my top 10 CDs this year. This man makes some of the most gorgeous music you'll ever hear...and 9 shows that to the fullest. Of course, it wasn't as good as the perfect O but it's still a gorgeous CD. 9 is filled with songs of anger and sadness, which seems to be Damien's specialty. I was floored when I first heard the current single "9 Crimes"...together him and Lisa Hannigan make some of the most heartbreakingly beautiful music I've ever heard. Damien's music never ceases to floor me, and 9 is a perfect example of that.

#19: Ray LaMontagne - Until the Sun Turns Black

I first became obsessed with Ray LaMontagne back in 2004 when his incredible debut Trouble was released. Until the Sun Turns Black was one of my most anticipated albums of the year, but as expected it didn't live up to the expectations of Trouble...and rightfully so, that album was nearly perfect. While in comparison it was weaker, as an album alone it was beautiful. Ray has one amazing voice that is best seen in his live shows, even if he is painfully shy. While it didn't live up to the hype, it wasn't a letdown by any means. I still love you Ray.

#18: Regina Spektor - Begin to Hope

Regina Spektor has begun to pop up all over the place nearing the end of 2006. She just recently got added to VH1's "Next Artists" list. I got Begin to Hope early in the year and fell in love with Regina's funky and fun anti-folk pop music as soon as I heard Fidelity. Regina is as shy as can be in person but her music is as bubbly as can be. Regina is going to gain a ton more fans over the next few months so be on the lookout!

#17: Teddy Thompson - Separate Ways

As I was reading SPIN magazine one day, I saw an ad for Teddy Thompson's newest CD Separate Ways and decided to seek out some music of his online. After reading he was the only song of famous musicians Richard and Linda Thompson I knew I could be expecting something good, and I was right. Teddy has a beautiful voice and writes some sweet folk-pop. Whenever I was in a bad mood, Separate Ways would help to lighten my mood. It's very apparent Teddy got a great deal of musical talent from his parents, lucky guy.

#16: Cat Power - The Greatest

Chan Marshall, also know as Cat Power, has been putting out beautiful music for years, but I really loved her 2006 release The Greatest. Chan has one of the most beautiful female vocals I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. The combination of her amazing voice and soft relaxing music made this CD a great one to drift off to sleep to in 2006.

#15: Califone - Roots and Crowns

I hadn't heard of the Chicago based Califone until this year but found out they have been putting out albums for years. I wasn't sure their CD Roots and Crowns would make my list this year, but after a few listens I realized how much I enjoyed it. It's some great indie rock that thankfully wasn't missed by myself this year. I have yet to hear their other CDs, but that's next on my list of music to seek out for 2007.

Top Albums's of 2006: #25-20 edition

So I have finally put together my list of my top 25 favorite CD's released in 2006. I've decided the best way to go about posting them is in increments of 5...so here we go folks. There are some you may hate and some you may love, but as with everything in life, it's just an opinion. Enjoy!

#25: Joshua Radin: We Were Here

I can't even remember how I first heard of Joshua, but I fell in love with his soft voice right away. He was played on Greys Anatomy many times this year, as were many artists on my list this year. Joshua gained a lot of popularity through Mr. Zach Braff as he was his newest obsession....and seen on the Last Kiss Soundtrack. Anyhow, Joshua makes pretty, but simple folk music and while his CD was nothing amazing, it was great background music for much of my 2006.

#24: The Frames - The Cost

The Frames are an Irish band who have been around for a number year with a slew of great releases. The Cost was released overseas this year and while it doesn't quite match up to some of their other albums, I still enjoyed it. The lead singer Glen Hansard put out a solo CD this year, which also made a spot on my list (a high one at that!). I have no doubt that while The Cost wasn't their greatest album, they have many more great ones in them.

#23: Brett Dennen - So Much More

I just recently made an entry about Brett Dennen a few back, but his while his CD was a fun one, it seemed to get pushed back on my list for better releases from the year. Brett has been around since 2004, but this young west coast singer/songwriter was hidden until this year with So Much More. I actually heard him on the radio the other day and was shocked. This kid made some fun music in 2006 and it's clear he's not stopping anytime soon.

#22: Ben Kweller - Ben Kweller

This is Ben Kweller's third album since 2002 and while it's not as strong as his 2002 release Sha Sha, I still loved it. Ben has said he played every single instrument on his self titled 2006 release, which in itself is pretty amazing. This guy is a talented musician who makes fun music...you can't go wrong with Ben.

#21: Gomez - How We Operate

Gomez is one of those bands that I saw all over the internet for years, but somehow completely missed...or more than likely, ignored...which was a big mistake. While I have heard many people say this was their weakest release, it was my first Gomez CD, and I loved it. Songs from How We Operate seemed to be all over the TV and radio and rightfully so. They make rock music that both the casual music listened and music snob can enjoy. Great band, and a great CD.

#20: Piers Faccini - Tearing Sky

Piers was an artist that I found through the ITunes suggested artists page. Seems the kiddies over at Itunes have some great taste because this is a fantastic. Piers was just signed to Everloving Records, which is home to Jack Johnson and Joseph Arthur and he seems to fit right in with the family. Piers has a beautiful voice with some laid back tunes that are good for any kid of mellow day.

If you haven't heard any of Beth Orton's music, you really need to get on it. Everything she has put out I have enjoyed a great deal, but her 2006 release Comfort of Strangers is her absolute best release to date. This CD is full of Beth's incredibly beautiful voice and gorgeous melodies. There isn't a track on it that I don't love. This puppy is defintely making a spot on my Top Ten CDs of 2006. (Which I keep talking about and haven't exactly had time to work on just yet, sadly).

There are so many great artists over the last few years to come out with some new modernized folk, and Beth is one who has joined the ranks. This CD is fantastic.

This album could be seen as a fresh start for Beth Orton, and she makes the most of it: As artlessly lovely as a spring day, this is some of her simplest work, and simply some of her best, too.

I first heard about Brett Dennen a few years back when his self titled CD came out and got sucked into his unique voice and fun folk music right away. A young musician from the west coast, Brett has a fun style of folk-pop that easily catches your ear. He's been featured on indie radio stations across the country and even fellow singer/songwriter John Mayer has said his newest CD So Much More is "A beautiful and spirited record. Instantly likeable." His CD has not left my playlist for awhile and I hope it doesn't leave yours.

I just got on my hands on the Gotye CD and while I haven't even given it a listen all the way through, I'm already loving it. It really isn't like many other CDs I have heard this year. He has a beautiful voice along with some fun electronic, eclectic beats. Heart's A Mess is a truly amazing song. Just give it a listen, you won't be sorry.

My lovely music soulmate Andrea had sent me some of Kunek's mp3s awhile back but didn't get her hands on the album until recently. I finally got a chance to give it a listen and it's fantastic. They're a relatively unknown band from Stillwater, OK who have finally put out their debut CD, Flight of the Flynns, for all of us to enjoy. Along the lines of Radiohead, Sigur Ros, and Elbow....this is some beautiful stuff.

Oklahoma's six-piece of talented multi-instrumentalists offer twelve songs that reflect the theory that music is a delicate intersection of science and emotion. Hypnotizing melodies that are at once hopeful and solemn, layers of complex harmonies, and spellbinding rhythms. The result is tuneful and complete, and from it all comes a sincerity, confident in the knowledge that this is music they've wanted to make all along.

So I have heard mention of Midlake on a few blogs and websites across the web, but it has been one of those bands that you see everywhere and somehow don't get a chance to listen. Well, it's about fucking time I did. Wow, these guys are awesome.

They have a bit of a 70's rock kind of feel to them, mixed with some current indie flavor. Tim Smith's vocal's will hook you in from the beginning. Their newest CD The Trials of Van Occupanther has not left my playlists since I got it. This one will be in my top 5 of 2006, no doubt.

Midlake might be stuck in the '70s, but they make it sound like the best place on earth.

Wow. I just found out about Piers Faccini today and I'm already in love. Piers is a frenchman who is the newest member of the Everloving Records family (home to Jack Johnson and Joseph Arthur).

This guy has one hell of a voice, that's for sure. His CD Tearing Sky just came out this week in the US and has everything from folk to blues and matched with his gorgeous voice, it comes together as some beautiful music. Apparently he is currently on tour overseas but hopefully he will be coming to the states soon. I am gonna have to catch this guy before he gets big. This is a great CD to pop in on a lazy rainy Saturday afternoon.

I discovered Ill Lit on the Itunes singer/songwriter music store spotlight and fell in love right away. His newest CD, Tom Cruise, came out this July. This CD is definitely going to make a spot on my top ten of 2006. (which I have to start figuring out!!) He's got a beautiful voice mixed with some catchy melodies.

On Tom Cruise, Ill Lit bring the cold frequencies of electronica back to their warm roots, kind of like Calexico meeting Iron and Wine meeting Wilco on the short-wave radio band. Rich and intelligent, Ill Lit's music will make you smarter… and richer, if you know what I mean.

Tom Cruise may be a little off the mark, but this CD definitely is not.
